Northern Region: REGSEC tasked to prevent land, chieftaincy conflicts

The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has been tasked to take a proactive approach to land and chieftaincy disputes, political violence and other security threats before they escalate into conflicts and loss of lives.

Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, made the call on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when he inaugurated the reconstituted REGSEC at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) conference hall.

He said the region’s security challenges required more than the efforts of conventional security agencies, stressing the need for traditional authorities, religious and community leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders to work together to identify and address threats early.

According to him, the expanded membership of REGSEC under the Security and Intelligence Act, 2026 (Act 1168), provides a broader platform for stakeholders to bring their experience, intelligence and community knowledge to security management.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” the Minister said, adding that effective security management was not always about having “boots on the ground” but also depended on collective intelligence and community knowledge.

He urged members of the reconstituted Council to pool expertise, intelligence, resources and operational capabilities to identify and respond to emerging threats within the law.

Mr Adolf identified land and chieftaincy disputes, political violence and situations that could lead to the breakdown of law and order as major security concerns in the region.

He cautioned members against treating REGSEC membership as an avenue for material or financial benefits, saying the role required commitment, sacrifice, time and, in some instances, personal resources.

He also called for orientation and continuous training for members, particularly those joining the Council for the first time. He said the Regional Coordinating Council would work with the national security authorities to provide the necessary training.

The Minister linked peace and security directly to the region’s economic development, noting that businesses, investments and government programmes could not thrive in an unstable environment.

He urged the Council to see its mandate as part of the broader development agenda of the government and work collectively to create a secure environment for communities and businesses.

Mr Adolf further commended the various security services for their professionalism during the funeral of the late Ya-Na, the Overlord of Dagbon, and the subsequent installation of his Regent.

He said the successful management of the events demonstrated the region’s capacity to handle major traditional and public gatherings when security agencies worked together.

The Minister subsequently declared the reconstituted Northern Regional Security Council duly inaugurated and charged members to uphold the law and protect lives, property and the peace of the region.
