The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Bampo Asare, has paid a courtesy visit to the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, as part of his tour to visit health facilities in the region.
The visit on Thursday, aimed to provide Dr. Asare with firsthand insights into the state of the health insurance scheme, engage with regional stakeholders, and identify areas for improvement.
Welcoming the NHIA delegation, the Minister commended Dr. Asare for his proactive approach in assessing healthcare delivery in the region. He emphasized the importance of strengthening health insurance implementation to improve access to quality healthcare services.
“The effective implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is crucial in ensuring that our people, particularly those in rural communities, receive the healthcare they need without financial hardship,” Adolf stated.
“We must work together to address the challenges of inadequate logistics, human resource shortages, and infrastructure deficits.”
Dr. Asare reaffirmed NHIA’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Ghana. He highlighted some key initiatives the Authority has introduced, including the Telehealth project, which enables remote access to healthcare services, and the rollout of free dialysis treatment in 40 health facilities nationwide.
“These interventions are designed to ease the financial burden on patients and improve overall healthcare accessibility,” Dr. Asare noted.
“By directly engaging with health facilities and stakeholders, we can better understand the challenges on the ground and implement policies that will have a meaningful impact”.
During the visit, the NHIA CEO and his team toured selected health facilities in the region to assess the operational effectiveness of the National Health Insurance Scheme. The interactions allowed them to gather crucial feedback from healthcare providers and patients regarding the challenges faced in service delivery.
Adolf also urged the NHIA to consider expanding infrastructure in the region, emphasizing that investments in new healthcare facilities and renovations of existing ones would play a critical role in strengthening the scheme.
“Our region needs more healthcare facilities to cater to the growing population. With adequate resources and efficient insurance coverage, we can ensure that healthcare services are not only accessible but also of high quality.”
Dr. Asre assured the Minister that the NHIA remains committed to collaborating with regional authorities to ensure that health insurance services are efficiently implemented and accessible to all.
The visit underscores the NHIA’s dedication to improving healthcare accessibility across the country through strategic partnerships and policy enhancements. With ongoing stakeholder engagements and facility assessments, the Authority aims to ensure that the NHIS remains a pillar of healthcare financing in Ghana.
