The Ashanti Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have apologized to the party’s defeated flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for their poor performance in the 2024 general elections in the Ashanti Region.

Ahead of the elections the party promised to secured 85% votes and demanded for resources that will facilities the achievement of the target.

According to Kwabena Nsenkyire all the resource required for theb accomplishment of the target was fully provided.

Explaining the party regional executives and the entire campaign team for the party in Ashanti region had no reason to fail the flagbearer.

During the December 7, 2024, elections, the party lost several parliamentary seats in the region to their main opponent, the NDC, with one seat going to an independent candidate.

Another constituency remains in contention. If the Tepa parliamentary seat, which is likely to be declared for the NDC, is confirmed, the NDC will control at least 10 parliamentary seats in the region.

This marks a significant increase from their previous four seats. The NPP’s parliamentary seats in the region have reduced from 43 to 36, the party’s worst performance in its major stronghold.

Speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Executives during a call to the outgoing Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice Chairman of the party in the Ashanti Region, Kwabena Nsenkyire, who was part of the Chairman Wontumi-led delegation, stated, “Your Excellency, we came here this morning to apologize to you. As leaders of the party in the Ashanti Region, we take full responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the region.”

He added, “That’s what leaders do when they fall in battle. So our message is very simple—we are here this morning to apologize,” he said, visibly disappointed.

The former Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) further assured Dr. Bawumia and his running mate that such a performance would not happen again.

“Your Excellency, I want to, on behalf of the party in the Ashanti Region, assure you that what happened in the elections in the Ashanti Region will not happen again,” he assured.

He continued, “We are here to also encourage you and declare our full support for you. Never consider retiring from your presidential ambition. What we want to say is that we are going to do our homework to correct our mistakes in the 2024 elections. We will address all the errors that occurred so we can stand firm and present you again. Be motivated—your defeat is a baptism of fire. We know that God will unveil His power to you soon. We stand on behalf of the party’s numerous supporters in the Ashanti Region to assure you of our unflinching support. Ashanteman is behind you, and with what we have done here, we know all the regions will also do the same.”

In the 2024 presidential election results, Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s running mate, lost 1.2 million votes in the Ashanti Region.

As the party conducts a postmortem into the election, some supporters have accused President Nana Akufo-Addo and his family and friends of hijacking the party’s government and ignoring the views of other party members, even as signs of economic decline became evident.
