The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticized the Speaker of Parliament for unilaterally suspending three of its Members of Parliament (MPs), calling the action selective, autocratic, and a threat to parliamentary accountability.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party described the suspension, which took place on January 31, 2025, as an attempt to intimidate the Minority, ultimately weakening its ability to hold the government accountable.
“The Party sees this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as very dangerous, with all these actions packaged to cow the Minority into submission,” the statement read.
The NPP reaffirmed its unwavering support for its MPs, vowing to stand by them against what it described as “repression and unfairness” in the enforcement of parliamentary rules. It also pledged full backing for the Minority Caucus’ scheduled press conference on February 3, 2025, and subsequent actions aimed at addressing the issue.
Furthermore, the party firmly rejected the Speaker’s decision, arguing that the move disregards both the Constitution and principles of natural justice.
With 88 NPP MPs in Parliament, the party emphasized its commitment to ensuring fairness in the legislature and upholding democratic principles in governance.
