The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has designated the Ghana Police Service as the only security institution authorized to provide security for its presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the party’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP said the decision was taken by its Presidential Elections Committee and must be strictly enforced at all voting centres, collation points, and related activities.
The party stated that it will not tolerate the presence or deployment of any non-uniformed, plain-clothed, or otherwise unauthorised security personnel, including operatives from National Security or any other institution.
According to the statement, the NPP has received information suggesting that some elements within National Security may be planning to deploy unauthorised operatives during the election.
The party warned that any such move would be considered an unlawful intrusion into its internal democratic processes, with the potential to disrupt or manipulate the exercise.
“The Party will not hesitate to invoke all lawful remedies available to it to protect the integrity of this process,” the statement said, adding that any unauthorised presence would be “challenged and resisted within the bounds of the law.”
The NPP commended the Ghana Police Service for what it described as demonstrated capacity and professionalism and expressed confidence in the Service’s ability to handle security arrangements for the primary.
It further called on the Police to enforce the directive “strictly and without compromise,” ensuring that only duly authorised and identifiable police officers are deployed, in line with assurances already given to the party.
The NPP presidential primary is expected to attract significant national attention as the party prepares to elect its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
