The Member of Parliament for the Krowor constituency, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Ing. Emmanuel Laryea Odoi, and the Krowor Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of sabotaging her development initiatives in the Krowor electoral area.
According to Dr Agnes, NPP supporters were caught in various communities with a truck removing functioning street lights, claiming they were either faulty or due for repairs. They hired an electrician to climb the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) poles and take down these operational solar street lights. Residents who were beneficiaries of the solar lights challenged them but still proceeded to remove them.
“How can you send NPP youth to remove functioning street lights? Even when residents point out that the lights are insufficient, you continue to take them down. These actions were carried out by known party members within the electoral area, and residents filmed the entire incident. We have reported this to the Nungua police,” she stated during her presentation.
The actions of the NPP youth have sparked significant tension among NDC supporters within the Krowor constituency. Their vigilance and support for the MP led to the arrest of some NPP youth who were captured on video removing working street lights. “We need to defend and protect the progress we have made, as it has cost us a lot. The MP Common Fund cannot address all the numerous challenges we face, so anyone removing anything I have installed that is not faulty draws our attention to action.
The police have already made arrests, but because their party is in power, the matter seems to be closed,” she lamented.
Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey made these allegations during her engagement tour in the Krowor constituency, where she met with residents in her 15 electoral areas.
In discussing her achievements in the health sector for Krowor, Dr Lartey recounted facing numerous challenges, including opposition, verbal threats, and discouragement from municipal assembly authorities, including the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE). She mentioned receiving threats of legal action if she persisted with the Polyclinic project.
“I received many calls as soon as I decided to continue the construction of the polyclinic, which had been abandoned under the NPP. The MCE opposed my request to use my common fund for the project. There were numerous meetings with government officials regarding this issue. The volume of calls and threats aimed at discouraging me was overwhelming. In the last meeting with the lawyers brought together by the MCE, I made it clear that I would continue the project no matter what.”
She explained to the constituents gathered that the Krowor Polyclinic project was an initiative of the NDC government, and she was not surprised when the NPP abandoned the project and even refused to pay the contractor after seven years. She revealed that the contractor agreed to continue working on the project in order to use the proceeds to pay the workers’ salaries. The lawmaker mentioned that the intervention of the local government minister helped to stop the actions of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and his supporters.
“The local government minister asked the MCE in a meeting why he was preventing her from continuing with the project when she was not taking it away, especially since he could not complete it due to funding issues. He allowed her to proceed, which is how I obtained my first common fund to provide support to the contractor working on the project,” she explained.
