The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of fueling chieftaincy disputes associated with violence and the illegal destoolment of some chiefs in the country.
Addressing NDC supporters in Esereso-Tenpomom, Atwima-Mponua Constituency, Asiedu Nketia alleged that the NPP is forcefully sponsoring the destoolment of certain chiefs so their preferred party members can take over. He claimed this is part of a grand “Agyapadie” scheme to exert influence over every aspect of the country, including the chieftaincy institution.
“Currently, the NPP government is meddling in certain chieftaincy disputes across the country. The NDC has never had any interest in chieftaincy matters or in imposing candidates on royal families and communities. We made it clear that it is not the government’s responsibility to select leaders for communities. This is the same reason we advised traditional leaders to refrain from involving themselves in party politics,” he said.
He further added, “But today, the narrative is different. Everywhere there is a chieftaincy dispute, you will notice that the ruling government is behind the confusion. Whenever a chief passes away and there is a succession contest, the government sneaks in to create chaos, trying to ensure an NPP member becomes the chief to serve their interests. All these developments are part of their ‘Agyapadie Document,’” he disclosed.
He questioned the government’s interest in the election of Islamic community Imams, stating, “What is the interest of the government in the election of Islamic community Imams that it would interfere? As we speak, the Chief Imam is still alive, yet the NPP is already preparing a successor who is a member of the NPP so they can gain control of the Islamic religion in the country.”
He warned, “Apart from this and other developmental needs, if we don’t sit up and vote against this government, our democracy will collapse. At this moment, it’s not about NDC or NPP. Nananom we must protect our democracy”
He added, “I’m happy that some core NPP members have tightened their belts, stating they feel ashamed to associate the Akufo-Addo/Dr. Bawumia style of governance with the NPP’s ideology. They will help us unseat them so that the country can realign its democratic governance in the right direction,” he concluded.
