John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has labeled the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the biggest political scam ever perpetrated on Ghanaians since the country gained independence in 1957.
Mahama criticized the NPP for misrepresenting itself as the savior of the nation while, in his view, working against Ghana’s development.
Speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, on Saturday, August 24, Mahama argued that the NPP should never have been entrusted with governing the country, accusing them of collapsing key sectors, including the economy and finance.
“This NPP administration is the biggest political scam pulled on Ghanaians since our independence in 1957,” Mahama stated. “They were repackaged with ribbons, sweetly scented with enticing promises, but most Ghanaians will agree that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the president Ghana never needed, and his much-touted economic wizkid, Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, is the economic messiah Ghana never received.”
Mahama, who is seeking to return to the presidency, also accused the NPP of mismanaging the energy sector. He highlighted that when the NPP took over from the NDC in January 2017, they inherited an energy sector that had been stabilized by his administration, which had mobilized nearly 800 megawatts of emergency power—the fastest in Ghana’s history.
“In addition, we implemented the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA), which had the potential to generate GH¢3 billion annually to pay off legacy energy sector debt,” Mahama added, criticizing the NPP for failing to build on these foundations.
