The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of eight individuals who perished in a tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, calling the incident a national tragedy and urging a full investigation into its cause.
In an official statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and called for national unity and compassion during this difficult period.
“Their passing is not only a devastating blow to their families but also a profound loss to the entire nation they worked to protect and build,” the statement read. “We pray that the Almighty God grants them comfort and strength during this excruciatingly difficult period.”
The victims, including Minister for Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, were onboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z‑9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft lost contact with radar and crashed near Adansi Akrofuom.
All eight occupants were killed, and their bodies were burnt beyond recognition, requiring DNA analysis for identification.
The NPP called for a “thorough, transparent, and swift” investigation into the cause of the crash, emphasizing that “the dignity of the lives lost demands answers and accountability to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”
The party also urged all Ghanaians to come together in prayer and solidarity, saying, “Let us stand with the families left behind. Let us console and strengthen one another.”
President John Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast. Investigations are currently underway, led by the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with civil aviation authorities.
The crash has plunged the nation into mourning, with tributes pouring in from political parties, civil society groups, and international partners.
“May the souls of these eight heroes rest in perfect peace until the last day of the Resurrection, when we shall meet again,” the NPP statement concluded.
