NPP national executive elections: 50 nominees pick forms to contest 11 positions, Gordon Asare Bediako drops from race to endorse Dennis Aboagye

This was at the swearing of the Vetting and Appeals Subcommittees of the National Officers Elections Committee into office on Friday

A total of 50 nominees have picked forms to contest 11 positions in the upcoming national executive elections of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The national executive positions being contested are actually nine, but in the National Vice Chairperson position in particular, the first three will be picked as first vice, second vice, and third vice chairpersons to bring the total national executive positions to 11 in total.

In effect, the roles are nine distinct positions, including National Chairman and General Secretary (with the top three National Vice Chairperson candidates filling out the total executive slots)

As of the close of day on Saturday (Aug 22), the last day of the purchase of forms, five aspirants, Paul Afoko, John Boadu, Boakye Agyarko, Sammy Crabbe and Bernard Antwi Boasiako had picked forms for the national chairman position.

The incumbent national chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim is not seeking re-election.

Mr Ntim took a break in May 2025.

For the General Secretary position, Eugene Boakye Antwi, Sylvester Tetteh and Charles Dwamena had picked forms to contest the incumbent Justin Kodua Frimpong, who is seeking a second term.

Gordon Asare Bediako

Media personality Gordon Asare Bediako, who had initiated moves to contest the National Communications Director position, has dropped from the race and endorsed Dennis Miracles Aboagye for the position.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye is now in the race with Evans Kodo.

In a statement issued Saturday night (Aug 22), Gordon Asare Bediako explained that the move followed a “deep reflection, wide consultation with family, friends, and stakeholders across our great party, and prayerful consideration of what is best for the New Patriotic Party at this defining moment; I have decided to withdraw my candidature for the position of National Communications Director.”

“This decision has not been an easy one. My ambition to serve in this role was born out of a genuine desire to help rebuild our party’s communication machinery and reposition the NPP for victory. That desire has not diminished, but I have come to the firm conviction that our party’s interest is best served by unity of purpose, not a division of energies. It is in this spirit that I am throwing my full and unreserved support behind Dennis Miracles Aboagye,” he stated.

Filing

The filing of completed nomination forms will commence on Sunday (Aug 23, 2026), and close on Saturday (Aug 29, 2026).

Following the close of filing, nominees will be vetted by the duly constituted Vetting Committee from Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3, 2026.

For the vice chairperson position, 13 aspirants have picked forms.

They are Henry Nana Boakye, who is moving away from the National Organiser position; Kojo Fosu Boadu; Mustapha Abdul Hameed, a former Chief Executive for the National Petroleum Authority; Samuel Pyne, a former Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi and former Ashanti Regional Secretary of NPP.

Others in the vice chairperson position are Richard Ahiagba, who is moving away from the National Communications Director position; Abena Pokua Boaitey Amoah, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, commonly referred to as Chairman Buga Buga, who is seeking re-election; Yaa Amponsah Frimpong, George Kwabena Abankwah Yeboah, Horma Miez, Richard Oti Aboagye, Bright Esselfie Kumi and Nana Akomea, a former Managing Director of STC and former National Communications Director.

In this particular contest, the first three will be picked as first vice, second vice and third vice chairpersons.

A press statement issued by the Chairman of the National Officers Elections Committee of the NPP, Fred Opare-Ansah on Saturday evening explained that the purchase or collection of a nomination form does not, by itself, constitute a valid nomination or candidature.

An aspirant becomes a nominee only upon the proper filing of the completed nomination form and the accompanying documentation
within the prescribed filing period, subject thereafter to the vetting and other processes provided for under the Party’s Constitution and the applicable election regulations.

The Committee said it has taken note of concerns expressed by some aspirants regarding the fact that a specific date for balloting has not yet been announced and clarified that “this is deliberate and not an omission.”

The Committee considers it prudent to allow the filing, vetting and, where necessary, appeals processes to run their course before fixing a firm date for balloting, it said.

It said the final composition of the field of candidates for the various positions can only be established after vetting and the determination of any appeals arising from that process. Experience from previous internal elections has also shown that where an aspirant is involved in an appeal concerning his or her qualification, balloting may have to await the final determination of that process.

“Fixing a balloting date prematurely could therefore result in its postponement or suspension should an unresolved appeal affect the list of candidates for any position,” it added.

It said the Committee had consequently retained sufficient flexibility in the timetable to enable it to fix and communicate one firm balloting date when the field of candidates has been sufficiently settled following the vetting and appeals processes and that all aspirants will be given adequate notice of the date, time, venue and procedure for balloting once the date is fixed.
