The New Patriotic Party (NPP) last Saturday held its regional executive elections as the party reorganises ahead of the 2028 general election.
The polls produced regional leadership teams that will spearhead grassroots mobilisation and organisational activities as the party seeks to rebuild and strengthen its structures following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
The polls were generally peaceful with no incidents of disruptions reported.
Except for some isolated administrative and organisational issues, the process was smooth.
Greater Accra
Our reporter, Benjamin Xornam Glover, reports from Tema that former Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, was elected as the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP.
He defeated his main contender, Alfred Boye, by polling 488 votes against 173 in the regional executive elections held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the WAEC Hall in Tema.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Okoe Boye pledged to work closely with constituency executives and described his approach as a “24-hour campaign” aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots, as well as targeting 21 parliamentary seats in the region.
Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, won the party’s Ashanti Regional chairmanship election after securing a decisive victory with 658 votes against his challenger, Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, a former Member of Parliament for Bantama and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who secured 269 votes.
Odeneho Appiah said his victory marked the beginning of a new era as it reflected the shared commitment to one common goal—to put aside personal differences, combine strengths, and work together to rebuild the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
Bono Region
From Sunyani, Biiya Mukusah Ali reports that incumbent Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, was retained after securing a decisive victory at the party’s regional elections held at Baakuniaba, near Sunyani, in the Bono Region.
Mr Baffoe obtained 201 votes to retain the chairmanship, beating his closest contender, Joseph Mensah, who obtained 31 votes.
The former Jaman South Member of Parliament (MP), Yaw Afful, polled 44 votes, while Afari Gyan and Kwabena Oppong failed to secure any vote.
Bono East
In the Bono East Region, Ibrahim Bukari Baba obtained 180 votes to beat his only challenger, Thomas Adu Appiah, who polled 73 votes for the regional chairmanship position.
Ahafo
Robert Sarfo-Mensah secured the chairmanship position in the region with 65 votes to defeat his contenders, Justice Appiah, who had 56 votes, and Kwabena Owusu-Sekyere, who polled 35 votes.
Central Region
Joana Kumi reports from Cape Coast that Joseph Esibu was elected Chairman of the Central Region for the party, defeating incumbent, Percy Dennis, in the party’s regional executive elections.
Esibu secured 278 votes, while Dennis polled 161 votes.
Northern Region
Our correspondent, Abukari Alhassan Baba, reports that the incumbent Northern Regional Chairman, Mohammed Baantima Samba, was re-elected to lead the party in the region.
Mr Samba secured 215 votes to defeat his closest contender, Amadu Inusah, who polled 122 votes out of the 387 votes cast.
The other contestants in the chairmanship race, Musah Fuseini and Salifu Abdul Mumin, obtained 44 and five votes, respectively.
Savannah
A former Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Clifford Abdallah Braimah, who sought the Savannah Regional Chairmanship position, lost narrowly to his contender, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana.
Braimah polled 88 votes in the keenly contested election but was defeated by Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana, who secured 92 votes to emerge victorious.
Upper West
Sahada Dramani reports from Wa that the regional executive elections were disrupted by a protest over the eligibility of some delegates to vote, even as Abdul-Aziz Abdu-Rahaman was elected Regional Chairman.
Mr Abdu-Rahaman polled 173 votes to defeat Kantong Alaska, who obtained 86 votes.
Western Region
At its elections held at Agona-Nkwanta, former Amenfi West Parliamentary candidate, Ignatius Kwesi Afrifa, was elected as Western Regional Chairman.
Afrifa secured 265 votes to defeat Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed, who polled 102 votes.
Eastern Region
From Asamankese, Haruna Yussif Wunpini reports that Jeff Konadu Addo polled 405 votes to beat his closest contender, Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang, who is also a former New Juaben North Constituency Chairman, who secured 292 votes.
Upper East
The 2024 parliamentary candidate of the NPP for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Elvis Figo Awonekai, has been elected the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman after polling 177 votes in the regional elections held in Bolgatanga, reports Gilbert Azeem Tiroog.
He defeated his closest contender, Dr Moses Kwabena Atinga, who obtained 123 votes. Filson Kweku Awankuah polled 18 votes, Patrick Ayaaba secured 13 votes, while Osman M. Konkonba obtained one vote.
Oti
A urologist, Dr Frank Yirenkyi, was elected the Oti Regional Chairman of the party.
Dr Yirenkyi polled 83 votes to defeat the incumbent Regional Chairman, Evans Yaw Dapaah, who secured 71 votes, while Hajia Sherifa Selina Sekyere-Tijani obtained 60 votes during the elections.
Volta Region
The incumbent, Makafui Kofi Woanyah, was retained as the Volta Regional Chairman after defeating his contender, Joseph Wallace Homenya, in the regional executive elections.
North East
During its elections, the incumbent regional chairman of the North East Region, Fusheini Nurudeen, was retained after polling 92 votes to defeat his contender, Sulley Sambian, who secured 64 votes.
