Dr. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, Member of Parliament for Walewale Constituency, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is contemplating legal action to prevent Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen from using the name “UP” for his new political party.

In an exclusive interview on GhOne News Tonight monitored by Kumasimail, Dr. Mahama described the choice of the party name by Alan Kyerematen as “problematic,” citing the historical legacy of the NPP.
“First and foremost, I think Movement for Change and the choice of name is problematic because the tradition of the NPP is rooted in the United Party. Alan Kyerematen and his new party appear to be hiding under the flag of the United Party,” Dr. Mahama asserted.
He added, “I’m sure fair-minded Ghanaians and members of the New Patriotic Party will first even test it in court to find out what does that name mean.”
When asked by the host if the party was prepared to take the matter to court, Dr. Mahama responded, “Of course. It is a very good case to test to see whether that name will even stand.”
He further expressed disappointment, saying, “I thought that Mr. Alan Kyerematen would have been much more thoughtful, and then Chairman together with the people from the party would have been much more thoughtful in the name they would choose.”
Reacting to a question about the legal status of the United Party name, Dr. Mahama explained, “United Party is a registered name and a recognized political party, even though it is defunct. It was consolidated to form what is now the New Patriotic Party. So, you should not just pick such a name for a new party.”
Background:
Former Trade and Industry Minister Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, yesterday October 16, officially rebranded his political movement, the Movement for Change, as the United Party (UP Plus) a move he says marks a new dawn in Ghanaian politics and pays homage to a historically significant name in the nation’s political evolution.
At the official unveiling of the party in Accra, UP Plus Chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface said the rebranding reflects a renewed commitment to good governance, transformational leadership, and credible public service.
“Today, we present to you the United Party or UP Plus a political organisation meant to bring real change to governance,” he said.
“We will make a difference because of our focus on universal values and respect for competent leadership. We are not just selecting people to lead, but those who are credible, competent, and have a vision.”
