Former Deputy speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has expressed deep concern over the growing destruction caused by illegal mining, popularly known as Galamsey, across the country.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Osei-Owusu recounted his recent visit to his cocoa farm, where he witnessed what he described as alarming levels of environmental degradation.
“I visited my cocoa farm about two weeks ago, and I’ve never seen such devastation before,” he said. “Every space along the road is lined, and I didn’t see any sign of activity to stop illegal mining. It’s worrying.”
He urged government agencies and local authorities to intensify efforts to combat the Galamsey menace, warning that the ongoing destruction of farmlands, water bodies, and forest reserves poses a severe threat to livelihoods and the environment.
“Immediate and collective action is needed to protect our lands and ensure sustainable livelihoods for our people,” he stressed.
Mr. Osei-Owusu’s comments come as the NPP gears up for its January 31 presidential primaries, a crucial internal contest that is expected to test the party’s unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
