President John Dramani Mahama has lauded the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, describing him as a “national asset” for his leadership in mediating the protracted conflict in Bawku.
The President made the remarks at the Jubilee House during the formal presentation of the Bawku Mediation Report by the Asantehene. The report follows Otumfuo’s chairmanship of a mediation process aimed at restoring lasting peace to the troubled municipality.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama, on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, expressed profound appreciation for the Asantehene’s intervention.
“On behalf of the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, senior government officials, and the entire nation, I wish to thank Otumfuo for this very honourable job he has done for God and country,” he said.
President Mahama commended the Asantehene’s decision to conduct the process in an open and transparent manner, noting that the live reading of the report had given citizens across the country first-hand access to its contents.
“He has shown that he does not belong to Ashanti alone. He is a national asset,” the President stated.
“We’ve received a copy, and I’m happy that you took the decision to be transparent about it and read the report yourself. This has been covered live. The whole nation has heard you reading the report, and I’m sure that we can act on it and make sure that we bring peace to Bawku.”
The Bawku conflict, which has periodically flared over the years, has drawn significant concern from government, traditional authorities and civil society.
The Asantehene’s mediation is expected to provide a roadmap for reconciliation and stability in the area.
