Chairpersons of various committees in Parliament have called for the retention of the current leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Legislature, even as the party transitions into opposition in the 9th Parliament.
Speaking to the press in Parliament, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Fanteakwa North, Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah, highlighted the leadership qualities of the current Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, emphasizing the strategic importance of maintaining experienced leaders like him as the NPP’s Minority Leader.
According to Asiamah and other committee heads, the party’s performance in the recent parliamentary elections, coupled with the numbers it secured, positions it to benefit significantly from experienced leadership in navigating the challenges of the opposition.
They argue that Afenyo-Markin’s experience, negotiation skills, and in-depth understanding of parliamentary procedures make him a valuable asset to the party in the 9th Parliament.
Additionally, his continued leadership could strengthen the NPP’s ability to effectively hold the government accountable while positioning the party for success in future elections.
The committee chairpersons also stressed the importance of a cohesive and strategic approach to leadership during this transitional phase, emphasizing that a well-organized opposition is critical for both the party and Ghana’s democracy.
This call comes amid ongoing discussions within the NPP regarding its leadership structure for the next parliamentary term.
The chairpersons believe that stability and continuity in leadership will enable the party to effectively adapt to its new role in opposition.
As the NPP prepares to take its place as the Minority in Parliament, the decision on whether to retain its current leadership remains crucial for the party’s prospects moving forward.
