The Regional Early Warning and Response Group (RERG), of the National Peace Council (NPC) in the Ashanti Region has condemned electoral violence that resulted in the death of three persons during the just ended December 7, 2024 Elections
The Peace Council has described the incidence of vandalism and violent confrontations that occurred in Asawase, Obuasi East, Ahafo Ano South-East and Ahafo Ano North Constituencies as acts capable of ‘destroying the democratic tenets’ of the country.
In a press statement signed by Dr Harriet Takyi, chairperson of the Regional Early Warning and Response Group, the NPC enumerated the occurrences and called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that anyone found culpable is duly prosecuted.
““Unfortunately at Mankranso and Akomadan, three (3) souls were said to have perished from gunshots at the collation center and an open clashes respectively. Also at Tepa, party thugs were reported to have disrupted the process at the collation center,” the statement read,”
“This act of violence is condemned and we call on the Security Agents to ensure persons who are found culpable are made to face the full rigorous of the law,” the statement recommended.
While the NPC congratulated winners of the elections, it asked “the winning party, especially at the grass-root level to be moderate in their celebrations.”
The NPC, further called for the incoming government and the outgoing administration to be diligent in observing all legal requirements of the transition process in a spirit of good faith.
“As we prepare to welcome a new governing body, we need to respect the tenets of our constitution during the transition period and beyond. We would encourage all citizens to be tolerant and respect our institutional structures and laid down procedures of our governance system,” the NPC encouraged.
THE Commission urged the entire public to “continue to play their respective roles in upholding the peace and tranquility enjoyed as a nation.”
