Presbyterian Moderator: Justice essential for peace during 2024 elections

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has emphasized the critical role of justice in sustaining peace during the 2024 general elections.

Addressing the 24th General Assembly of the church at the Ramseyer Training Centre in Abetifi, Kwahu, he called for an incident-free election and urged the Electoral Commission and political party leaders to ensure a transparent, fair, and peaceful electoral process.

“Peace will only thrive in a state of justice,” declared Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye. He continued, “We urge the Electoral Commission to maintain transparency and call on political party leaders to avoid personal attacks, incitement, divisive language, and disinformation in their public statements.”

The Moderator also advised political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns, warning against the promotion of violence. “Political campaigns should be peaceful and centered on sharing ideas. Violence must not be encouraged. We all look forward to a violence-free election,” he stated.

His remarks come amid concerns from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has refused to sign any peace declaration ahead of the election, citing unresolved incidents from the 2020 elections.

During the General Assembly, themed “Celebrating Our Heritage: Persisting in Missions,” Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye also congratulated Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on her re-selection as the running mate for the NDC.

“We congratulate you, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on your selection as the running mate of the NDC flagbearer. This is the second time you have been chosen by His Excellency the former President, which is a testament to the trust and confidence he has in you. We pray that the Lord will guide you in all your endeavors,” the Moderator said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who represented the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama at the event, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s challenges. She drew a parallel with the Biblical story in Genesis 18, where God intervened to save the righteous, likening it to the NDC’s concern for the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians.
