President John Dramani Mahama has announced a 20 per cent incentive on the basic salaries of health workers who accept postings to deprived and underserved communities.
The incentive is part of government’s efforts to address the uneven distribution of health professionals and attract more workers to areas with the greatest healthcare needs.
President Mahama announced this at a Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) community engagement in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District as part of his Resetting Ghana tour of the Upper West Region.
He commended health workers serving in underserved communities and urged residents to support and appreciate professionals who accept postings to their areas.
The President said government was also working to improve roads, water, electricity and other basic amenities in deprived districts to make such communities more attractive to health professionals.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced that government had procured an additional 5,000 healthcare bags and 7,000 motorcycles and tricycles for distribution to FPHC facilities across the country.
He said the equipment would complement items already distributed and strengthen the capacity of health workers to undertake community and household visits.
The Fian Health Centre also received essential medical equipment, including delivery beds, cardiac machines, phototherapy machines and healthcare bags, to support the delivery of FPHC services.
The government’s FPHC programme seeks to bring essential healthcare services closer to communities, particularly in underserved areas.
