President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated to national teams.
Delivering the State of the Nation Address 0n Thursday 27th February 2024, the President instructed the Ministry of Youth and Sports Kofi Idi Adams to ensure that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other sports bodies provide detailed accounts of their expenditures.
President Mahama stressed that Ghanaians have the right to know how much the government spends on national teams, particularly in international competitions such as the World Cup qualifiers. He underscored that sports funding, which comes from taxpayers, must be disclosed to the public to ensure accountability.
“The budget presented by the Ghana Football Association and other sports associations must be made public. After all, it is taxpayers’ money that funds these activities,” he stated.
He further reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing public expenditure, noting that this policy applies across various sectors, including sports and recreation.
The President’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the management of sports funds, especially in the wake of major international tournaments.
