President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to take immediate action to address the $156 million funding shortfall caused by the suspension of the USAID international funding program.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, President Mahama expressed deep concern over the financial gap, particularly the projected $78.2 million deficit that could severely impact critical health and social interventions.
These include malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition, and the fight against HIV/AIDS, which relies on the availability of antiretroviral drugs, testing, and prevention programs.
The President has instructed that priority be given to mitigating the adverse effects of the funding disruption, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, signed the statement, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and social welfare amid the financial constraints.
