Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to place national interests above political affiliations as they begin their legislative careers.

Speaking at an orientation program for new MPs on January 11, 2025, Mr. Bagbin underscored the importance of addressing Ghana’s pressing challenges, urging lawmakers to remain focused and diligent in their service to the nation.

“I want to urge you to stay focused and work assiduously towards solving the challenges facing our nation. That is the number one priority, not your political party or affiliations. It is very critical, and those of you who are not observant should refocus,” the Speaker said.

He further highlighted the benefits of prioritizing national development over partisanship, cautioning MPs against extreme loyalty to political parties at the expense of the country.

“Those who truly put Ghana first advance in politics, while those who are extremely partisan may rise within a particular regime but will collapse once that leader is no longer in power. After that leader’s tenure, you may become irrelevant,” Mr. Bagbin warned.

The orientation, a routine exercise in Parliament, is aimed at equipping the new MPs of the 9th Parliament with knowledge of parliamentary regulations and procedures to ensure effective legislative performance.
