Professor Ernest Yorke has been elected the new President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) following a highly participated national election that marked another significant moment in the Association’s leadership history.
The results, declared late Saturday, November 15, 2025, confirmed Prof. Yorke’s victory over his closest contender, Dr. Justice Yankson, in an electronic ballot conducted nationwide.
Prof. Yorke secured a decisive mandate, receiving 1,857 votes, representing 53.6% of the total valid ballots cast. The results were announced by the Chairperson of the GMA Electoral Committee, Dr. Aija Larsen-Reindorf.
His victory reflects broad confidence among GMA members in his vision and leadership, positioning him to steer the Association’s agenda on negotiations, policy advocacy, professional development, and welfare improvements in the years ahead.
Prof. Yorke, a distinguished academic and health advocate, has served the GMA in several capacities over the past decades, including junior doctors’ representative council member, divisional secretary, divisional vice chair and member of the GMA council.
His progression through the Association’s leadership structure is seen as deliberate and steady, giving him deep insight into the challenges confronting Ghanaian doctors from specialist training gaps and inadequate healthcare infrastructure to remuneration disputes and broader health policy concerns.
As President, Prof. Yorke is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping national health policy, strengthening public health readiness, and managing the Association’s relationship with the Ministry of Health.
His election marks the beginning of a new chapter for the GMA as the Association looks ahead to addressing both longstanding and emerging issues within Ghana’s healthcare system.
