Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana has criticized the government for suspending road toll collection, calling it a mistake.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points, Gyampo stated, “This government is not suffering from only winner takes all but also winners know it all, they did not listen to the wise counsel not to abolish the tolls. You don’t have money but you are abolishing road tolls’’.
The government is planning to reintroduce road tolls in 2025, after canceling them in 2021.
Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced that Cabinet has approved a framework for the reintroduction of tolls during the presentation of Mid-year budget in Parliament.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also supports the return of road tolls, citing the need for innovative solutions to fund infrastructure development.
Gyampo’s comments come as the government faces criticism for its handling of the road tolls and the failed e-levy, which was introduced as a substitute for the tolls.
