The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Ghana has taken its long-running dispute with Ukraine over ancient Crimean treasures to the Ghanaian public, opening a street exhibition in Accra accusing Western Europe of plundering Russian cultural heritage.

The exhibition, titled “Crimean Gold: ‘Civilized’ Europe is Plundering Russian Treasures,” features 12 informational posters highlighting archaeological artefacts excavated in Crimea and held for decades in the collections of four Crimean museums.

The Russian Embassy says the collection includes ancient weapons and armour, jewellery, ritual objects, household items and tools, with some of the most prominent pieces dating as far back as the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.

At the centre of the exhibition are valuable pieces of jewellery discovered at the Ust-Alminsk archaeological settlement in Crimea.

The exhibition also revisits one of the most contentious cultural-property disputes arising from Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.

In 2013, Crimean museums entered into agreements with the University of Bonn and the Allard Pierson Museum of the University of Amsterdam to lend archaeological treasures for an international exhibition, “Crimea: Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea.”

The exhibition opened in Amsterdam in February 2014. But Russia’s annexation of Crimea that year created a dispute over where the objects should ultimately be returned.

Russian Embassy

The Allard Pierson said the contested objects remained in the Netherlands from 2014 while courts considered competing claims from Ukraine and the Crimean museums.

The legal battle eventually reached the Dutch Supreme Court, which ruled in June 2023 that the disputed artefacts should be returned to the Ukrainian state rather than the four Crimean museums from which they had been loaned. The Allard Pierson subsequently transferred the remaining 592 disputed objects to Ukraine in November 2023.

The Ukrainian side has described the returned collection as including ancient and Scythian-era treasures, while the National Museum of the History of Ukraine said the artefacts would be kept in Kyiv until the future status of Crimea is resolved.

It is this contested history that Russia is now presenting to visitors in Ghana from a markedly different perspective.

The Russian Embassy says the artefacts were originally treasures of Crimean museums and argues that their transfer to Ukraine amounted to the illegal appropriation of Russian cultural property.

The embassy’s exhibition therefore seeks to frame the controversy not simply as a museum dispute, but as part of a broader struggle over cultural ownership, historical identity and the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Russian presentation, however, differs fundamentally from the position reflected in the Dutch court proceedings. Dutch courts ultimately recognised the Ukrainian state’s claim over the disputed objects, culminating in the 2023 Supreme Court ruling.

The controversy also illustrates how archaeological treasures can become entangled in modern geopolitical conflicts.

Many of the objects date from periods long predating the existence of modern Russia or Ukraine, including Scythian and other ancient cultures associated with the wider Black Sea region. Their modern ownership has nevertheless become a politically charged question following the change in Crimea’s political status in 2014.

The Russian Embassy says the Accra exhibition is intended to draw international attention to what it describes as the unlawful appropriation of Russian cultural treasures and to support their eventual return to the Russian Federation.

It says the exhibition has already attracted visitors at the embassy and is inviting members of the Ghanaian public to view the display.

For Ghanaian visitors, the exhibition offers more than a glimpse into ancient Crimean history. It also provides a window into one of the Russia-Ukraine war’s less visible battlegrounds, where museums, archaeological collections and questions of cultural ownership have become part of a wider international dispute.
