Police in Ghana’s Eastern Region say three people have died following a fuel tanker accident on the Suhum–Nsawam Highway.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 14 February 2026, the Eastern South Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service said the tanker, which was transporting petrol from Tema to Kumasi, was involved in a crash at Ntoaso on the Accra–Suhum dual carriageway.
Preliminary investigations suggest the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the tanker to burst. Spilled fuel ignited and spread to vehicles travelling behind it.
Police said six vehicles and four motorcycles were destroyed in the fire.
Two unidentified male bodies were recovered from the scene, while another unidentified body was found in one of the burnt vehicles.
Four people who sustained injuries in the explosion were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service in Suhum and Nsawam were deployed to extinguish the blaze.
Police said officers had begun visiting hospitals to help identify victims, while efforts were under way to clear damaged vehicles from the road to ease traffic congestion.
Motorists using the stretch have been advised to slow down and comply with police instructions to ensure their safety.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
