Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, has alleged that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members provided financial backing to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 general elections, aiding the opposition’s victory over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on Kumasi base Angel FM monitored by Kumasi Mail with host Nana Agyei Bohyen, Asenso-Boakye blamed the NPP’s bruising 2023 flagbearer primaries for weakening the party.
“Our contest to elect a flagbearer in 2023, the campaign we ran and the things we said about ourselves, became the message the NDC used against us. They were playing it on TV and some of our own NPP people were actively working against our win in 2024 it was difficult,” he stated.
He added that internal attacks created deep divisions, with some members refusing to support the winner as per party guidelines.
“It’s all because of how we conduct our primaries. My understanding is that when you go for primaries and lose, by party rules and guidelines, you support the winning candidate but some do not understand it that way. After the election, they will be sabotaging,” he remarked.
The MP confirmed active undermining, including financial aid to the NDC. When pressed by the host “not just rhetoric but people were working to make sure Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will lose,”Asenso-Boakye nodded, replying, “Exactly. Including some sponsoring the then opposition party against us.”
He recounted a call from an NDC activist detailing NPP members delivering cash to the opposition leader in Kumasi.
“I received a call from a known NDC activist who told me about specific NPP members who visited the then opposition leader in Kumasi and brought him money,” he claimed.
Asenso-Boakye decried post-election attacks from the same saboteurs, who now claim “Dr Bawumia didn’t do well so we should present another candidate.”
“It is sad that today, some of these people are saying Dr. Bawumia didn’t do well and that we should present another candidate. It’s not good; if you are an NPP person, no matter the situation my party right or wrong you have to support an NPP candidate.
Despite personal views, he vowed, “I’m not supporting other candidate but should they emerge, I have no choice. I’ll work hard for whoever is selected.”
