U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 Summit, which the United States is scheduled to host in Miami, Florida.
The announcement was made in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), in which the president accused the South African government of failing to address what he described as human rights abuses against Afrikaners and other descendants of European settlers.
Trump claimed the United States did not attend the just-ended G20 Summit in South Africa due to what he called the government’s refusal to acknowledge or act on the alleged abuses.
The U.S. government has not previously issued any formal communication confirming a boycott of the summit, and Trump’s claims have not been independently verified.
In the statement, Trump accused South African authorities of permitting violence and unlawful land seizures targeting white citizens allegations that the South African government has repeatedly denied in the past.
He also criticised U.S. media organisations, including The New York Times, accusing them of ignoring the issue. Trump offered no evidence for the allegations contained in the post.
The president further claimed that South Africa refused to hand over the G20 presidency to a representative of the U.S. Embassy who attended the closing ceremony. This claim has not been corroborated by U.S. or South African officials.
In the same post, Trump said he had directed that the United States halt “all payments and subsidies” to South Africa, though he did not specify which programmes or agreements would be affected.
There has been no accompanying statement from U.S. government departments confirming such a policy change.
As of publication time, the South African government had not issued an official response to the president’s remarks.
The 2026 G20 Summit is scheduled to be held in Miami, Florida, marking the first time the United States will host the forum since 2009.
