Hearts of Oak delivered a statement performance at the Baba Yara Stadium, edging rivals Asante Kotoko 1-0 in a fiercely contested Super Clash to reignite their Ghana Premier League title ambitions.
In a fixture steeped in history and emotion, the Phobians rose to the occasion, overcoming adversity to secure their first league victory in Kumasi since 2018.
The decisive moment arrived early in the 14th minute when defender Baba Adamu towered above the Kotoko defence to meet Martin Karikari’s inviting set piece. His powerful header slipped past a poorly positioned Mohamed Camara, sending the travelling supporters into raptures.
The early goal set the tone for a tense encounter, but Hearts were dealt a major blow before halftime when Emmanuel Amankwah was shown a red card for a reckless challenge. Reduced to 10 men, the Accra-based side were forced into a disciplined defensive display against a Kotoko team desperate to respond.
Kotoko pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Hearts stood firm, showing grit, organisation and composure under pressure. Every clearance and block was met with loud cheers from the away bench, as the Phobians demonstrated the resilience that has characterised their recent resurgence.
The result carries significant implications in the title race. League leaders Medeama had the opportunity to stretch their advantage before matchday 22 but were held to a 1-1 draw by Aduana, leaving the door ajar.
Hearts capitalised brilliantly, trimming the gap to five points with 12 matches still to play — a scenario that keeps the championship picture wide open.
For Kotoko, the defeat compounds a difficult period. Already eliminated from the MTN FA Cup, the Porcupines now trail Medeama by eight points in the league and face mounting pressure to rediscover form. Operating under interim management, the club must quickly decide on its direction as the campaign enters a decisive phase.
Historically, Kotoko still hold a slender advantage in the head-to-head record, with 41 wins to Hearts’ 39 in 120 meetings. However, on this occasion, it was Hearts of Oak who seized the bragging rights and shattered a five-game winless streak in the league against their fiercest rivals.
Momentum can shift rapidly in football, and this hard-fought triumph in Kumasi could prove to be a defining chapter in Hearts’ pursuit of domestic glory.
