Task Force recommends compensation for family of Silas Who was murdered in Banda Kabrono by NPP supporters
A government task force investigating the murder of Silas Wulochamey, a young teacher and sailor who was stabbed to death in Banda Kabrono by NPP supporters in 2020, has recommended that monetary compensation be paid to his family while investigations into the case continue.
The recommendation follows challenges faced by investigators in obtaining full witness cooperation due to longstanding rivalries between the communities of Banda Ahenkro and Banda Kabrono in the Bono Region.
Despite the lack of witness testimony, the task force has urged that the case docket be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Office for further review and prosecution.
The report was formally submitted to the Minister for the Interior, who disclosed the update during a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday.
The briefing provided an overview of the government’s assessment of electoral-related violence during the 2020 and 2024 election periods, including unresolved cases such as the Banda killing.
“The Attorney-General has been advised to facilitate compensation for the family of the late sailor, Silas, while the police continue to pursue the case,” the Minister noted.
Background
Silas Wulochamey, a 28-year-old teacher and member of the Ghana Navy Reserve, was stabbed to death on Monday, July 13, 2020, at Banda Kabrono by NPP Supporters .
The incident occurred during the voter registration exercise ahead of the 2020 general election.
According to police reports at the time, Silas was attacked while riding his motorbike from Wenchi to Banda Ahenkro, the district capital.
His murder was widely condemned across the country and drew national attention to rising political tensions in parts of the Bono Region.
Initial investigations identified the killing as being politically motivated, linked to clashes between rival political groups during the voter registration period.
Several suspects were arrested in connection with the crime, but the case has since stalled due to difficulties in gathering evidence and securing witness cooperation.
The latest recommendations from the task force are aimed at reopening the case while ensuring that the victim’s family receives justice and financial support in the interim.
The Interior Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing all forms of election-related violence and ensuring accountability for victims and their families.
