Flagbearer for Alliances For Revolutionary Change, John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has expressed strong disagreement with former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.

Kyerematen, who recently formed his own political movement called Movement for Change, in an interview with OyerepaTV has challenged Kufuor’s assessment of Bawumia’s qualifications for the presidency.

Kyerematen questions Kufuor’s familiarity with Bawumia, asking where and when Kufuor first met him.

He also challenges Kufuor to specify Bawumia’s accomplishments that justify the endorsement.

“Where and when did President Kufuor meet Bawumia? Where did he find Bawumia? What has Bawumia accomplished for President Kufuor to say he’s the best person for the job? I’m challenging President Kufuor to list what Bawumia has done”, he angery stated.

Alan added “Kufuor said Bawumia came to read some papers; is that sufficient grounds to claim he’s qualified to be President”, he asked.

Disappointment and Reflection

Expressing disappointment, Kyerematen reflects on his relationship with Kufuor, stating that if the former president now claims not to recognize his worth or contributions, it is ultimately up to him.

“Today, if he stands on platforms and says he doesn’t know Alan’s worth and doesn’t know the work I’ve done, it’s up to him; I can’t say anything about it”.

This sentiment reveals a deeper emotional layer to the political rivalry—a sense of betrayal from someone he once considered an ally.

The former Trade Minister emphasizes his own experience and contributions during Kufuor’s administration.

“I’ve been a minister under his government, and even before I became a minister, he knew my worth”.

Kyerematen recalls that Kufuor previously acknowledged that 70% or more of his government’s policies originated from Kyerematen’s ideas.

“Kufuor is on record as saying that when he was in government, 70% or more of his policies came from Alan. He doesn’t hide it, and it’s the reason I’m bitter about the way he says things that provoke people to attack him”, Kyerematen noted.

John Agyekum Kufuor in an interview with selected Kumasi journos on Sunday, 17 November, thr former President called on Ghanaians to support Dr Bawumia in the December elections, describing him as the most suitable candidate to lead the nation.

The former President emphasised that, given the current global circumstances, he believes Bawumia’s presidency could significantly improve Ghana’s economy.
