Wa West Member of Parliament, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has launched a sharp attack on the previous Akufo-Addo-led government, blaming it for what he described as an “eight-year mess” that cannot be fixed overnight.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, December 21, 2025, the legislator criticised growing pressure on President John Dramani Mahama, including from supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to deliver instant results.
“It can never be that the eight-year mess inherited can be corrected within a year,” Mr. Toobu stated, adding that no government can immediately roll out new policies, see them mature, and make “all grassroots happy” at once.
The former police officer-turned-lawmaker cautioned party faithfuls against impatience driven by unmet personal expectations, warning that Ghana must not return to what he described as a dark period under the previous administration.
“I doubt if you would prefer Ghana returns into darkness where we were all wailing and gnashing our teeth,” he said, recalling a time when “some were more Ghanaian than others.”
Mr. Toobu cited what he described as economic mismanagement under the Akufo-Addo government, including the banking sector clean-up. He noted that “GHS25 billion was said to be used to solve a banking sector problem that required the injection of GHS9 billion,” while inflation and exchange rates were “competing to destroy the economy.”
He contrasted that period with current economic indicators, arguing that although conditions are not perfect, there are signs of recovery. “Check the current exchange rate, inflation, debt-to-GDP ratio and prices of goods in the markets. All you can see won’t be perfection, but hope,” he said.
The Wa West MP also recalled what he described as wasteful excesses of the past administration, stating, “How can you just forget that a V-8 vehicle was assigned to carry just a chair? It hurts to recall the stories that broke the nation’s spine.”
Despite the criticism, Mr. Toobu urged Ghanaians to remain hopeful and support President Mahama’s leadership, especially during the festive season.
“Faith and patience are identical twins,” he said, warning that impatience could lead to false satisfaction, likening it to eating “gobɛ that’s not well cooked” while still searching for relief.
He ended the post by wishing Ghanaians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, calling for unity and patience as the country looks ahead.
