The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has now accepted the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) 2026–2030 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), which introduces new increases in electricity and water tariffs effective January 1, 2026.
Under the MYTO, electricity tariffs have gone up by 9.86 percent while water tariffs have been increased by 15.92 percent for the 2026-2030 period.
In a joint statement issued by the TUC General Secretary, Mr. Joshua Ansah, and the Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, the two institutions confirmed that they held two separate meetings on December 11 and December 30, 2025, to discuss the new tariffs and their broader implications.
According to the statement, the discussions focused on how the tariff adjustments would affect the living conditions of workers, as well as their impact on electricity reliability, sector investments, and the overall performance of the power and water industries.
The parties also explored avenues for deeper collaboration between the TUC and the PURC in future tariff-setting processes.
Following the engagements, both parties reached a number of key understandings.
First, the PURC reaffirmed its position that reversing the tariff decision would have serious consequences, not only for the institutional independence of the Commission but also for the stability of the energy and water sectors and the wider Ghanaian economy.
Second, the Commission acknowledged the concerns raised by the TUC regarding the burden of tariffs on workers and pledged to take these concerns into account during the next tariff review window.
Third, the TUC indicated that it will closely monitor the effect of the new tariff adjustments on salaries and wages. The outcome of this monitoring exercise, the statement noted, will guide the Congress’s next line of action on behalf of workers.
In addition, the TUC committed to engaging government on current wage levels and their adequacy in the face of the rising cost of living and increased utility charges.
“The engagements between the TUC and PURC underscored the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration to ensure that tariff decisions are made in a manner that safeguards electricity stability, improves water access, enhances economic stability and affordability, while addressing the concerns of the Ghanaian worker,” the joint statement concluded.
