The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has agreed to the implementation of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) 2026–2030 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), which increases electricity tariffs by 9.86 per cent and water tariffs by 15.92 per cent, effective January 1, 2026.
The decision follows a series of meetings between the leadership of the TUC and the PURC held on December 11 and December 30, 2025, to assess the impact of the new tariff structure on workers’ living conditions, electricity stability and investments in the power and water sectors.
In a joint statement issued in Accra on December 30, 2025, the two institutions said the discussions also explored avenues for sustained collaboration to balance sector stability with affordability for consumers.
According to the statement, the PURC maintained that reversing the tariff adjustments would have far-reaching consequences, not only for the Commission’s regulatory independence but also for the stability of the energy and water sectors and the broader Ghanaian economy.
While acknowledging the concerns raised by organised labour, the Commission gave assurances that issues affecting workers would be considered during the next tariff review window.
For its part, the TUC said it would closely monitor the impact of the tariff increases on salaries and wages, adding that the outcome of the monitoring exercise would guide its future actions. The Congress also committed to engaging government on prevailing wage levels and their implications for the cost of living of Ghanaian workers.
The joint statement stressed the importance of continuous dialogue between the TUC and the PURC to ensure that tariff decisions support electricity reliability, improved water access and economic stability, while remaining sensitive to affordability and the welfare of workers.
The statement was signed by the Secretary General of the TUC, Mr Joshua Ansah, and the Executive Secretary of the PURC, Dr Shafic Suleman, both on December 30, 2025, in Accra.
