The Management of the University for Development Studies (UDS), led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, has presented the prestigious FISU World University Football Championship Trophy to the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II, King of the Dagbon Traditional Area.
In remarks, His Majesty Yaa-Naa Abukari II congratulated the Management of UDS and the gallant football team for bringing immense pride, not only to Dagbon, but to Ghana and the entire African continent. He described the team’s global triumph as a historic moment that has elevated the image of northern Ghana and inspired young people across the region.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Seidu Al-hassan, in turn, expressed deep gratitude to the Overlord for his continuous support and blessings over the years, support which, he said, had culminated in this moment of global glory for the University and for Ghana. He appealed to the Overlord to use his influence to help the University to develop state of the art sports infrastructure.
The Director of Sports, Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, who coached the team to the world title in Dalian, China, also thanked the Overlord for his prayers and moral support before the tournament, which, he noted, strengthened the team’s resolve to make the nation proud.
His Majesty Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II presented each player and member of the technical team with a traditional Dagbon smock, symbolizing royal appreciation and community pride.
The players sang some “jama” in the presence of His Majesty as a sign of their happiness and appreciation.
Before the delegation departed, the Overlord graciously gave permission for the team and management to tour the site of the ongoing construction of the new Gbewaa Palace, marking the perfect end to a royal day of celebration and honour.
