The Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has strongly criticized his predecessor, Simon Osei Mensah, over the poor state of key government residences under the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC).
In an interview with GHOne TV, Dr. Amoakohene lamented the condition of the official ministerial residence and the Presidential Lodge, which he claims have been left in a state of disrepair.
Using a striking metaphor to express his frustration, he stated, “Uncles are expected to leave a legacy for their nephews; unfortunately, mine left me with debt and a messed-up residence.”
His comments have since sparked public debate over the maintenance and accountability of state facilities in the region.
Dr. Amoakohene’s interview with Ghone TV, has brought back discussions about past disagreements regarding the Presidential Lodge’s condition.
In 2017, the then Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Elizabeth Agyemang, hosted the former Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia few days in the facility few month the previous government had left.
When the then regional minister Simon Osei Mensah had travel out of the country.
However, upon his return from an overseas trip, Simon Osei Mensah reportedly opposed the decision, arguing that the Vice President should have been accommodated in a hotel.
Elizabeth Agyemang, however, disagreed, insisting that the facility was in good shape and that there was no justification for government funds to be spent on hotel accommodation.
According to sources close to the former administration, this disagreement led to tensions between the regional minister and his deputy.
Kennedy Agyapong’s Intervention
The abandoned state of the Presidential Lodge and the minister’s residence also drew the attention of firebrand politician Kennedy Agyapong.
During a visit to the Ashanti Regional Minister’s office, Agyapong reportedly observed that
both facilities had been neglected and taken over by weeds. “ Known for his direct approach to issues, he allegedly compelled Simon Osei Mensah to personally oversee the clearing of the overgrown vegetation before leaving the premises ‘’ another closed at ARCC.
Dr. Amoakohene’s revelation has triggered renewed calls for greater accountability in the management of government properties. The state of the ministerial residence and the Presidential Lodge raises broader concerns about governance, infrastructure maintenance, and administrative transitions in the region.
Efforts to reach Simon Osei Mensah for comments have so far been unsuccessful. However, political observers expect further reactions as the issue gains traction.
As Dr. Amoakohene prepares to assume office, the focus will now be on how his administration addresses these challenges and restores the integrity of these key state facilities.
