The University of Ghana is set to benefit from a 10,000-capacity student hostel following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Singapore to expand student accommodation.
The agreement formed part of several MoUs signed during President John Dramani Mahama’s state visit to Singapore at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Other agreements signed included partnerships between Rock Africa, Robin Village Development, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), and Uni Premier for prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) and affordable housing projects.
Rock Africa and Ascent also signed an MoU for the supply of mass flow meters and tracking solutions, while another MoU was signed between Rock Africa, Ascent, and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the design and construction of a new oil jetty in Ghana.
Further agreements covered advanced security systems for airport operations between Rock Africa and Ascent Solutions, as well as collaboration between the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Rock Africa, and Pan United on road and pavement materials testing and construction projects.
A letter of intent was also signed for the redevelopment of a high-quality international-standard mixed-use project in Accra.
President Mahama used the visit to engage investors and encourage stronger economic partnerships between Africa and Asia with Singapore in the lead.
The three-day visit was marked by significant diplomatic and investment talks expected to translate into tangible outcomes in Ghana in the coming months. President Mahama noted that his vision far outreaches state diplomacy into trade, not aid.
The Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that the president has directed that a consulate be established in Singapore to bolster Ghana-Singapore ties. He, however, extended an invitation to Singapore to reciprocate the same with a mission in Ghana.
