Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the performance and accountability of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) as part of the country’s economic reset agenda.
She made the remarks on Thursday at the 2026 Stakeholder Conference organised by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), where she stressed the need for continued reforms to improve efficiency and financial sustainability across the public enterprise sector.

According to the Vice-President, SOEs remain critical to Ghana’s development because they manage significant national assets, generate revenue and provide employment opportunities.
However, she noted that persistent challenges such as operational inefficiencies, financial losses and weak accountability continue to put pressure on public finances.

She explained that ongoing reforms—being implemented by the Ministry of Finance (Ghana) in collaboration with SIGA—are aimed at strengthening corporate governance, enforcing performance contracts, improving transparency and ensuring financial sustainability across the sector.

The Vice-President also disclosed that government is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of the State’s equity portfolio to strengthen the performance of public enterprises and guide future strategic investments.
She further highlighted the importance of the Public Enterprises League Table (PELT), describing it as a key tool for promoting transparency, benchmarking performance and encouraging continuous improvement among SOEs. This year’s PELT Awards, she said, will recognise outstanding performance within the sector.

Reaffirming government’s broader vision, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said well-governed and high-performing state-owned enterprises are essential to reducing fiscal risks and advancing national development.
She added that government remains focused on transforming SOEs into strong and efficient institutions capable of driving economic growth and creating shared prosperity.
