The Member of Parliament for Wa East, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has raised concerns over the performance of Junior High School students in the constituency in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), calling for stronger supervision of schools to reverse the trend.
He said although poor BECE performance was a national concern, the Wa East District Education Directorate must intensify monitoring and supervision to improve learning outcomes in the district.
Dr Jasaw made the call at Bulenga when he presented GH¢223,000 in bursary support to 223 JHS graduates from across the constituency.
Each beneficiary received GH¢1,000 under his JHS Leavers Bursary Support Programme to support their transition to Senior High Schools and technical institutes.
The beneficiaries, who obtained aggregates between 6 and 35, were selected based on their academic performance.
Dr Jasaw said the cash-based support was deliberate, explaining that many Senior High Schools already provide items such as mattresses and chop boxes, making direct financial assistance more useful to beneficiaries and their families.
He urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and use the support to pursue their educational goals.
The MP said the bursary was also intended to reward academic effort and motivate other students in Wa East to improve their performance.
He, however, stressed that financial support alone could not address the district’s educational challenges, urging education authorities to strengthen monitoring and supervision at the school level.
The bursary presentation was held at the Bulenga Traditional Council’s conference hall.
