Abdul Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced a groundbreaking proposal to formalize the party’s security units.
This initiative aims to integrate groups like the Invisible Forces, Bulldogs, and Delta Forces into a structured security framework within the party.
“We will bring everyone back, and one of the proposals I am going to sponsor is that we formalize them within the party, creating a security unit that will oversee operations from the national to the constituency level.”
In a One on One conversation with Bonohene on AsaapaFM, Mustapha emphasized that these groups are not vigilantes but dedicated party members who play a crucial role in the electoral process.
A Shift in Perspective
Mustapha’s stance marks a significant shift from previous narratives that have often portrayed these groups as vigilantes.
He argued that since they are active voters, they should be recognized as integral components of the party rather than being marginalized.
Mustapha said “As long as I remain in this party, whether I am a national executive member or not, we will never again say that we will disband our boys or groups—the Invisible Forces, Bulldogs, and Delta Forces. They are not vigilante groups; they are party members. Don’t they vote? If they vote, why call them vigilantes? Even if they are vigilantes, we need them.”
The proposal comes as the NPP seeks to strengthen its internal structures ahead of future elections. However, it also raises concerns about the potential for increased political tension and violence, given the historical context of these groups’ activities.
Mustapha recalled the 2020 Techiman South incident, where President Akufo-Addo faced blame for the loss of lives.
He noted that while the NPP has been cautious to avoid such blame, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) seems less concerned about the repercussions of their actions.
“What Sammy Gyamfi was doing, holding press conferences and ordering people to take over constituencies, we will do some of that. Because when we were in office, anytime someone lost their life, the government in power was blamed”
“When people died in Techiman South during the 2020 election, Akufo-Addo was blamed. So, I was quite careful in this particular election so that we wouldn’t be blamed for killing people. But I realize that the NDC people don’t care about anything.”
