Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has declared his intention to be a “working national chairman” as he makes a case for leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its next national chairman.
Speaking on Tuesday to constituency organizers and their deputies in the Ashanti Region, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP said the party’s current circumstances demand a leader with strong grassroots credentials and the drive to lead the charge to reclaim political power in 2028.
“I stand before you to assure the nation through you that I am ready to be a working national chairman when given the mandate,” Wontumi said. “The 2028 election is not for the books but for those who are tried and tested at the grassroots—someone who is popular, ready to work, and determined to secure victory for the party.”
He argued that the NPP needs leadership that reflects the aspirations of party members and inspires hope among Ghanaians, stressing that he is prepared for what he described as the difficult political battle ahead.
“What we can offer party members and Ghanaians now is hope. I am built for the battle ahead,” he said, urging organizers to support his ambition.
Wontumi, a three-term Ashanti Regional Chairman and former two-term constituency chairman, said his years of service have adequately prepared him for national leadership. He assured party members that he would not compromise on actions that could weaken the party’s appeal to voters.
Outlining his vision for the role, he said his focus as national chairman would be on the constituencies rather than the party headquarters.
“As national chairman, my work will be at the various constituencies,” he said. “The general secretary will take charge of the party at the headquarters, but my work is with the people to ensure we bring in every vote heading into 2028.”
He also appealed to party members to assess him based on performance rather than academic qualifications.
“Don’t judge me based on my certificate, but on my competency and what I can do for the total growth of the party,” he said.
Organizers at the meeting appeared receptive to his message, with several expressing a preference for leadership rooted in grassroots experience. To them, Wontumi represents a leader who understands the party’s base and has risen through its ranks.
