A young couple from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region is appealing to the public and benevolent organisations for financial support to help save the life of their five-year-old daughter, Joycelyn Amoako, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Joycelyn, born on January 15, 2021, has been diagnosed with a posterior fossa tumour, a condition requiring urgent neurosurgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
According to her father, Philip Amoako, medical examinations, including an MRI scan, confirmed the presence of the tumour and the need for two specialised procedures to prevent further complications.
The first procedure has already been performed after doctors discovered that the tumour was blocking the flow of fluid within Joycelyn’s brain, causing the fluid to accumulate.
Doctors subsequently inserted a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to drain the excess fluid from her brain into her abdomen.
“Thanks be to God, we have been able to afford that procedure,” Mr Amoako said.
However, the family says the more critical procedure — surgery to remove the main tumour from Joycelyn’s brain — is yet to be completed.
The parents are therefore urgently seeking financial assistance to enable the medical team to perform the craniotomy and excision of the tumour.
The estimated cost of the pre- and post-operative care is GH¢80,000 (approximately US$7,400).
For the family, the financial burden has become overwhelming as they race against time to secure the funds needed for their daughter’s treatment.
Mr Amoako has consequently appealed to individuals, charitable organisations, churches, businesses and the general public to support the family financially and help give Joycelyn a chance to recover.
