The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that 16 commercial drivers were arrested on Monday 26th January 2026 for allegedly extorting passengers by charging illegal transport fares in parts of Greater Kumasi.
The arrests were made during a special enforcement exercise led by the Ashanti Regional National Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) John Kwame Jabari, with support from other security agencies. Several vehicles involved in the alleged offences were also impounded.

According to the regional minister, the operation is aimed at restoring sanity within the commercial transport sector, particularly addressing complaints of arbitrary and unauthorized fare increases by some drivers.
The one-month-long exercise is a collaborative effort between National Security and various security forces, targeting fare-related violations and other forms of misconduct among commercial drivers particularly ‘Troto operators’.
Dr. Amoakohene said drivers arrested during the operation are likely to be prosecuted by the police or fined in accordance with the law.
The enforcement exercise, which began on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2026, is continuing today across selected parts of the Greater Kumasi metropolis as authorities intensify efforts to protect commuters from exploitation.
