A devastating fire swept through the Anwona Market near Afful Nkwanta in the Kumasi Metropolis on Monday night, destroying over 300 shops and causing losses estimated to run into millions of cedis.
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after a similar fire outbreak at Sofoline, which destroyed 26 vehicle mechanic shops and 39 vehicles. In just one week, the Ashanti regional capital has recorded three major fire incidents, raising concerns among residents and authorities.
The Anwona Market fire reportedly started around 10:00 p.m. on Monday and spread rapidly through sections of the market. Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly but faced serious challenges accessing the scene due to road blockages leading to the market, which delayed firefighting efforts.
Eyewitnesses GHone TV Ashanti regional correspondent Isaac Justice Bediako that the fire is believed to have started from the footwear production section of the market, where highly flammable materials are often stored.
Some affected traders have alleged arson, suggesting the fire may have been deliberately set to pave the way for the redevelopment of the market. According to them, several attempts by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to redevelop Anwona Market have previously been resisted by traders.
The traders have warned that they will strongly oppose any redevelopment plans imposed by the KMA without their consent.
As of Tuesday morning, victims were still at the scene assessing their losses, with many left devastated after losing their entire livelihoods.
The Ghana National Fire Service has commenced investigations to determine the cause of the fire, while authorities are expected to engage market stakeholders amid growing tensions and public concern over the spate of fires in the metropolis.
