A total of 7,163 delegates are expected to participate in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Congress and election of national officers scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The congress is expected to focus on the election of national executives as well as proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.
Proposed constitutional amendments
The party is expected to consider fewer than 20 proposed amendments, including provisions that were not adopted during the last constitutional amendment conference held in Accra in January 2026, as well as new proposals arising from subsequent deliberations.
One of the key proposals seeks to change the provision on who should be recognised as the leader of the party.
At the January 31 conference, the party introduced a provision stating that the National Chairman would be the leader of the party at all material times.
The new proposal seeks to designate the party’s flagbearer as the leader of the NPP.
Another proposed amendment concerns the election of Vice Chairpersons.
Under the current arrangement, candidates contest the position of National First Vice Chairman, with the first, second and third Vice Chairpersons determined according to the number of votes obtained.
Under the proposed system, candidates would instead declare and contest specific Vice Chairperson positions.
Delegates are also expected to consider a proposal for the appointment of three additional Vice Chairpersons who would not be elected.
Other proposed amendments include the appointment of Deputy Communications Officers and the elevation of the IT Officer position to an executive position.
Based on the procedure adopted at the party’s Legon conference, the Chairperson of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, or a representative, is expected to present the motions arising from the proposals before delegates vote by voice.
Regional breakdown
The Ashanti Region has the largest delegation, with 1,122 delegates, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 773 and the Eastern Region with 732.
The Savannah Region has the smallest delegation, with 184 delegates, followed by the Western North Region with 223.
The voting strength will vary across the different national organiser positions.
According to the figures provided, 2,745 delegates are expected to participate in the Youth Organiser election, while 1,275 will vote in the Women’s Organiser race.
A total of 858 delegates are expected to participate in the election of the NASARA Organiser.
The election of the national executives is expected to be a major component of the congress, alongside consideration of the proposed constitutional amendments.
