Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has called on the party’s leadership to openly admit that internal mistreatment contributed to low voter turnout among members during the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a post-election “Thank You Tour,” Agyapong emphasized reconciliation and grassroots accountability as critical to rebuilding trust.
Agyapong stressed that peace within the party hinges on acknowledging past failures.
“What I’m talking about is not about equality but about peace,” he said.
“All the elders here – it shouldn’t be hard for us to admit that a lot of party members didn’t vote because we didn’t treat them well. If we can admit that, I believe members will forgive us.”
The former Assin Central MP highlighted unresolved grievances among polling station executives, urging national leaders to prioritize direct engagement.
“If we want to thank them, we must start from the polling stations,” he said.
He added “We, the elders here, cannot act as messengers and go to apologize to the polling station executives.”
He cautioned against repeating the oversight of excluding grassroots members from the Thank You Tour.
“I’ll plead with you, national executives: next time, for us here we understand the issues, the bitterness among the grassroots-stemming from our failure to invite them-must not happen again”.
