At least 1,504 people lost their lives in road crashes across Ghana between January and June 2025, according to provisional data released by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

The alarming figures come amid growing public outcry over road safety, especially following a tragic accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway on Monday evening that claimed 15 more lives.

According to the NRSA report, a total of 7,289 crashes were recorded nationwide within the first six months of the year.

These incidents involved 12,354 vehicles and left 8,300 people injured. Additionally, 1,301 pedestrians were reported to have been knocked down during the period.

On average, the data indicates that Ghana experiences 40 road crashes daily, resulting in eight deaths and injuries to 46 individuals each day.

Roughly 69 vehicles and motorcycles are involved in accidents every single day.

The NRSA has described the situation as deeply concerning and called for urgent national attention to reduce the rising toll.

Road safety experts and campaigners continue to urge stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, better road infrastructure, and intensified public education to address what many are calling a national emergency.
