The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned what it describes as threats of death and physical assault on some of its senior members by executives of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP alleged that its Minority Leader, Osafo-Maafo Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Member of Parliament Frank Annor Dompreh were threatened by NDC’s First National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, and the Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu.

The governing party also accused Chief Sofo Azorka and his “notorious hoodlums” of physically attacking its Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, describing the incident as “unprovoked” and reckless.

“Such violent conduct by no mean a person than a National Officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of our democracy and has the potential to create further insecurity in the country,” the statement read, referencing Ghana’s recent decline on the Global Peace Index.

The NPP said it would formally lodge complaints with the Ghana Police Service against the alleged perpetrators.

It further urged the Inspector General of Police to take swift action by arresting and investigating Chief Sofo Azorka, Alhaji Abdul Wahab, and “any other person captured in the videos widely circulated in the media.”

The party concluded by insisting that the actions of the NDC executives must be “properly investigated and punished.”
