Two people have died and seven others sustained injuries in a road traffic accident at Abor Junction on the Mankessim–Accra Highway in the early hours of Thursday.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at the Mankessim Fire Station at 1:44 a.m. reporting the collision.
According to the Service, a rescue team from the Mankessim Fire Station, working in collaboration with the National Ambulance Service, was dispatched a minute later and arrived at the scene at 2:01 a.m.
Firefighters found a crashed Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 8911-25 and nine occupants at the accident scene.
The victims comprised two females and seven males. Two of the occupants—one male and one female—were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining seven sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The rescue team secured the accident scene and assisted the injured into ambulances for immediate transportation to health facilities.
Three of the injured were taken to the Mercy Women Catholic Hospital in Mankessim for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the Saltpond Government Hospital mortuary in Saltpond.
The Ghana National Fire Service said the cause of the accident is yet to be established. However, it noted that the driver of the vehicle escaped unhurt.
Following the rescue operation, firefighters cleared debris from the highway to reduce the risk of secondary accidents and restore the free flow of traffic.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the crash.
