The planned redevelopment of the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium into a modern multi-purpose sports complex has moved a step closer, with the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, inspecting the facility ahead of a technical assessment by the Sports Ministry.
The inspection was aimed at assessing the current state of the stadium and identifying issues that could affect the redevelopment, which is expected to commence before the end of 2026.
The Minister was accompanied by the Regional Coordinating Director, Bless Kwame Darkey; Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Roland Ayoo; the Regional Director of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority; and the Regional Director of Sports.
The proposed redevelopment is expected to significantly expand the sporting facilities available in the regional capital.
Plans include a main football pitch and a separate training pitch, athletics tracks, basketball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool, high-jump and long-jump facilities, as well as facilities for boxing and other indoor games.
Conference facilities are also expected to form part of the new sports complex.
However, land-related issues remain part of the preparations for the project.
During the inspection, Minister Atanga met with landowners connected to the stadium site to discuss matters concerning the land and possible encroachment.
He said the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, under the leadership of the MCE, would continue engagements with the landowners and take the necessary steps to resolve outstanding issues as preparations for the redevelopment progress.
The latest inspection follows discussions between the Regional Minister and the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, on plans to redevelop the existing stadium.
A team from the Sports Ministry is expected in the Upper East Region in the first week of October 2026 for a further assessment of the site.
The visit is expected to provide additional technical assessment and help advance preparations towards the redevelopment of the facility.
