A Japan-funded electricity substation project aimed at improving power supply reliability in Tamale and surrounding communities is expected to begin in March 2027, with construction projected to take between 18 and 24 months.
The RCC Substation project, being undertaken with funding from the Government of Japan through grants, is part of efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and address growing power demand in the Northern Region.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) disclosed the timeline during a meeting with the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
The delegation, led by NEDCo representatives, visited the NRCC to discuss preparatory arrangements and secure the Council’s continued cooperation ahead of construction.
The Director of Administration of the NRCC, Mr Baba Ahmed Abdul Rahaman, assured the delegation that the Council would provide the necessary institutional support to facilitate the smooth execution of the project.
He said the substation was an important investment in the region’s development, particularly as Tamale continues to expand and demand for reliable electricity increases.
Mr Abdul Rahaman, speaking on behalf of the Northern Regional Minister, chiefs and people of the region, commended the Government of Japan, JICA and NEDCo for supporting critical infrastructure development.
He pledged the Council’s cooperation in areas including security, stakeholder coordination and engagement with relevant institutions to ensure the project was successfully implemented.
The NRCC has already released a parcel of land earmarked for the construction of the substation, a contribution acknowledged by the visiting delegation.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr Mabe Joshua Biliwi expressed appreciation to the Council for making the land available and supporting the preparatory processes.

He stressed that sustained cooperation among the implementing agencies, local authorities and other stakeholders would be crucial to keeping the project on schedule.
The delegation also disclosed that the substation project would be undertaken alongside the regional hospital project, formerly known as the Tamale Central Hospital project. Both projects are being funded by the Government of Japan through grants.
When completed, the substation is expected to improve electricity supply reliability in Tamale and surrounding communities, support businesses and strengthen the delivery of essential public services.
The NRCC reaffirmed its readiness to work with JICA, NEDCo and the project contractor to facilitate the construction process and ensure the timely delivery of the project.
